Stewed Meatballs with Spices (Soutzoukakia)

INGREDIENTS

600 gr. minced beef 5 slices of crustless, stale bread 150 ml. red wine 4 garlic cloves 1 tsp cumin ¼ tsp cinnamon ¼ tsp nutmeg salt pepper Horio Classic olive oil Flour (for frying)

INGREDIENTS For the sauce

1 onion 2 garlic cloves 200 gr. Chopped tomatoes 200 ml. Tomato juice 200 ml. Red wine 2 tbsp Horio Cow Butter 1 tsp sugar 1 cinnamon stick 3-4 allspice berries 2-3 cloves freshly ground pepper salt

DIRECTIONS

  1. Puree the garlic and soak bread in red wine.
  2. In a bowl, place minced beef and add the bread, cumin, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt & pepper (to taste)
  3. Knead the mixture for 5 minutes and set aside for 10 minutes.
  4. (For the sauce) Chop onion and garlic and add all sauce ingredients in a saucepan, simmer until thick sauce is created.
  5. Knead meatball ingredients into oblong-shaped soutzoukakia and lightly sprinkle with flour and then we either fry in olive oil or bake, until golden brown
  6. Once prepared, drizzle with sauce and serve!

Tips:
Traditionally, soutzoukakia are prepared with a mixture of minced beef and lamb.
